John Hourigan Passed away

Better known as Johnny, Mr. John Hourigan a permanent resident of Mccluskiegunj passed away in his sleep on 21st July 2024.

John was living alone in the campus of Mr A De'Rosario who is the founder of the well known Don Bosco Academy school here.

John never married so he lived alone all his life. He had relatives but preferred to be by himself. He would visit his relatives occassionally, especially on Christmas day.

John was born on 5th November 1958. He was 66. We the people of the Gunj will always remember him because he was a very famous figure and knew most of the people here. He was a great fan of actor Dev Anand.

May his soul rest in peace.

ATM at McCluskiegunj

This is really cool!

Yesterday there was great celebration time for the people of the gunj. We were celebrating the inauguration of the new ATM which is the first in town. Oh, it's now very convenient for all of us and also for visitors.

Before today, we had to either go to Khalari, Dakra or Chandwa or as far as Mandar, which is 7, 10, 25 and 35 KM respectively just to withdraw cash.

It's a great relief for everyone now. Isn't this great news?

Please do leave a comment.

Hello Everybody!

A few days ago, I had a friend visit me and while I was showing him around I happened to find this brick. There are many old bungalows that used these bricks to build the initial bungalows. Though this is the first brick that I have found which bears the complete marking which reads CSI Ltd. Earlier I had found a smaller bit which had just a part of the marking.

The Colonization Society Of India Limited was registered in 1932 and this is when the society baked these bricks for the first lot of bungalows. Interesting, isn't it?

Thought it a good idea to share this with you all.

Hello folks.

Yes, it has been quite some time since I last posted anything. So, here is a short one to let you all know that the blog and blogger still exist.

During this pandemic session we all have suffered and many have lost their loved ones and many are losing day by day. When the whole country was under lock-down, all had to stay indoors and we all are aware of how we felt.

So, as soon as we got released from the lock-down I thought of  going to meet mother nature. And wow! after being in peace for three months undisturbed, she looked fresh and happy.

These pictures are of a place called Dhoti (pronounced as Dhonti) which is merely 6 or 7 kilometres from McCluskiegunj railway station. Can't reach the spot where the pics are of in a four wheeler. walking or on bikes, yes.

McCluskiegunj Railway Station

There were times that I recall when we had to climb over stationary goods trains to cross from one platform to the other.

We used to climb in-between bogies that mostly carry coal and had to step on the connectors that connected bogies together and would mess up our hands by holding on to whatever we could to get across.

Even worse, we would crawl under the standing goods trains to board a train going down east. The ticket counter is close to the up line that goes west. That is if we didn't wish to dirty ourselves by climbing across. We use to hope that the signal remains red while doing so.

This is a common practice at small stations even now but not in the Gunj. We now have a footbridge and since this has been built, we now use either of the two roads that go to the station which was something to consider before.

Great news, isn't it?

Water crisis for the wild

Hi folks. It’s been a long time since I posted anything on this blog. Not much happening around. The heat is at its peak. The rivers and streams are drying...
Every year I would go to the rivers and streams to check on the water level and this year it is shocking...
Villagers depend on these rivers and streams for bathing and washing clothes. Many even wah utensils and many take water hone for cooking and drinking purposes.
One reason that I think has caused the water to vanish altogether is that the central government is searching for coal in and around the Gunj. Workers from C.M.P.D.I. Ltd.  are pumping out the water from streams into huge containers mounted on trucks which they use for drilling. This has been going on for a year now. There are many other sources available for the trucks to load water from and these are old open coal mines that are now full of water throughout the year.
Animals  and birds are suffering the most. One side the heat and on the other side no water. Nobody is concerned and nobody cares for  animals and birds.

A Unique Wedding in McCluskiegunj

On the first day of April I was invited to a wedding in the basti here. I usually avoid attending wedding ceremonies and parties but just not to hurt the feelings of the basti residents, I went along with my brother-in-law who was also invited.

The site was beautifully decorated and well arranged. It was a Muslim wedding. The food was just as good as the decorations and what really struck my attention was the absence of music which made it a unique wedding.
Usually, all weddings have loud music throughout the night and at times are disturbing too. I asked why there wasn’t any music playing and was told that it was the special request of the groom. Great!

McCluskiegunj Forest Department Needs To Wake up.

While looking at old photographs taken years ago in the jungles of McCluskiegunj, I could find a huge difference between the photos of the eighties and recent ones. The forest. That’s the difference. It reflects how in the past forty years McCluskiegunj has lost most of its beauty.

I began thinking of the various ways that made the Gunj almost bald. Some reasons that were public were also known to me. Such as; huge trees were cut and stripped in the forest illegally and were sold by the powerful locals earlier when the forest was dense. But later when the Maoist arrived in around 1987 they began looking after the jungles and gradually put a stop to it. They needed the jungles for hiding. Those who disobeyed were punished physically/monetarily.

In the past decades the population of the Gunj has increased tremendously. Most of the new population are villagers from nearby areas out of the Gunj. They build huts/houses on forest, railway and no man’s land, cultivate a bit and keep cattle (goats, cows, buffaloes, pigs). Most of them are daily labourers, vendors, drivers, and many in the illegal alcohol business having the latest bikes and jazzy mobile phones per person in the family but can’t afford toilets and cooking gas.

These villagers treat the forest as their father’s property. They need wood to build, they need firewood, they need fencing to protect their vegetable fields, and they need to feed their cattle. They get all their needs for free from the forests.

The Forest Department has failed to protect the forests, the wild animals such as the deer, wild boar, bear, leopard and tiger over the years and is still in the same situation so now the remaining forest is being attacked. No leopards or tigers have been reported of for over half a century.

Though local residents do inform Forest Officials via verbal conversations over phones, sms and WhatsApp with pictures of people taking freshly cut trees. But no action is taken so far.

There is need to educate the villagers of the area to use dried leaves and twigs or even dried and fallen branches or trees as firewood if they prefer not to use government subsidized cooking gas. They should also be made aware of the law concerning forests and wild animals. Notice Boards, Warning Boards etc should be put at areas where hardly any forest remains. The Forest Department MUST do their job.
